Mangos are so tasty and I love them in smoothies. One of my favorite food stores has a small selection of kitchen tools and one day I spotted this nifty mango splitter by OXO Good Grips. Here is the slicer sitting with mango on my cutting board. The black parts on either side are the handles; they have a rubbery grip. The mango pit goes through the center and the rest of the flesh goes through each side.
I am so glad I bought it! It is so much easier and safer than a knife. Here are a few demo pictures. You can click on the images to get a really big close-up view.
Start by placing the mango upright. Put the splitter on top and press down while holding the black handles. I couldn’t hold the camera and the splitter at the same time so in this picture, I stopped slicing partway to take the picture. Sometimes the pit is not perfectly centered in the fruit so you may have to adjust the splitter so that the pit comes through the middle space.
The mango is now sliced all the way down leaving two pieces of flesh that can be easily peeled and chopped. You will also be able to cut pieces of fruit off the pit.
You can find the OXO Good Grips Mango Slicer in kitchen stores, some food stores, and on Amazon.com for a reasonable price. On Amazon it’s between $13 – $14. It’s a sturdy product that has held up well. I have put mine in the dishwasher (top rack) without problems. When my mom saw this tool at my house she was so impressed she went out and bought one for herself!
The cutting board I’m using is an EcoSmart product by Architec. It’s made of 100% recycled food-grade plastic blended with flax husk (Polyflax). It comes in brown, green and red. I purchased mine at a home organization store but it is also available on Amazon.com. I LOVE this cutting board! I’ve had it for over a year and it still looks almost as good as when I first purchased it. It’s durable, washes well, and can withstand any temperature in the dishwasher. Highly recommended.
The mango I sliced was made into these smoothies:
This was a warm smoothie recipe made with two mangos, two bananas, a few tablespoons of flaxseed, and steaming hot water. Mmmm! I threw in a handful of celery leaves for extra nutrition. Didn’t tell hubby and he couldn’t tell!
Always use non-glass blender containers when blending hot ingredients to avoid a possible explosion and personal injury. I used my Vitamix.
