The Keto Diet
The keto diet has many benefits for your body and overall health. These are such as weight loss, decreased cravings, and better defense against diseases. It, however, comes with certain side effects. It is important to read now about them, to understand what to expect when you adopt this diet.
These side effects are not felt uniformly by everyone. They are also known not to last for long. They also come differently for each person. You need to, therefore, know about each side effect and how to deal with them.
You shall at first feel like peeing all the time. As your body metabolizes all the stored glucose in your liver and muscles in the first few days, you will release a lot of water. Your rate of urinating shall go up exponentially. After your body gets accustomed to the diet; this rate shall go back to normal.
As you pee that much, you shall lose more minerals like potassium, magnesium, and sodium than normal. You may feel dizzy, lightheaded, and fatigued. You can counter that by getting more potations from foods such as leafy greens, dairy, meat, poultry, and fish. You can also get more sodium by adding salt to your food. Be careful if you have high blood pressure to the addition of salt. There are also magnesium supplements you can take.
There will also be low blood sugar. This shall be your body showing what the lack of carbs in your diet has done. You will have to give the body time to adjust to this new reality.
A keto diet is known for its elimination of sugar cravings. But as you start, you will feel the strongest cravings. Those ones will need you to be disciplined about it.
As you lose all that water, your body shall develop constipation. You can deal with constipation brought about by water scarcity by taking foods rich in fiber, getting enough salt, and taking more water daily, to soften the fecal matter.
You may also experience muscle cramps, especially in your leg muscles. By taking plenty of water and more salt, you shall arrest the mineral loss.
You will also experience keto flu, which behaves the same way as normal flu when the diet is new. It manifests with headaches, fatigue, lethargy, confusion, and irritability.
These are the main symptoms that affect the majority of those starting on this diet. You may also feel other symptoms, which you can find out more about here. The best way to deal with a majority of these side effects is by drinking more water, increasing your salt intake, and getting enough fat. You need to also stick with the diet until your body adjusts to it.
